Discharge Printing – Soft, Breathable Prints for T-Shirts
Discharge printing is a water-based printing method in which the garment's original dye is removed from the printed areas. This reveals the fabric's natural light color, resulting in a print that feels almost identical to the fabric itself. It is an excellent choice for premium custom-printed T-shirts when a soft, breathable finish is the priority.
The discharge ink can be lightly tinted with white pigment to create a natural off-white effect. This produces an attractive vintage-style print while maintaining an exceptionally soft hand feel. Adding larger amounts of white pigment increases opacity but also makes the print feel slightly firmer.
Colored Discharge Printing
Discharge ink can also be tinted with basic colors such as red, green, yellow, and blue to create vibrant, colorful prints. However, because the colors are created through the discharge process, exact PANTONE® color matching is not possible.
When to Choose Discharge Printing
Discharge printing is an excellent option when you need:
- Ultra-soft prints with virtually no surface feel
- Breathable prints without a thick layer of ink
- Premium custom T-shirts for larger production runs
- An eco-friendly printing method using water-based inks
Limitations
Discharge printing is not suitable for all fabric colors. Due to the dye chemistry, it does not produce reliable results on Royal Blue and Burgundy garments.
Because the ink preparation and printing process involve several additional production steps, the minimum order quantity for discharge printing is 100 pieces.
